A cord blood bank has opened in Syracuse, New York, by Upstate University Hospital. It collects and stores blood from umbilical cords of newborn babies. The blood is rich in stem cells that can be used to treat various diseases and conditions. The cord blood bank is the second in the state and one of 32 nationwide. It plans to offer both public and private banking options for donor families. The project was delayed for several years due to funding and design issues, but was finally completed with the help of a state senator.
Sen. John DeFrancisco, R-Syracuse, who played an important part in lining up state money for the project said, “There were some down days when I thought this would never happen”
