New research shows that getting the COVID-19 booster shot during pregnancy can greatly boost immunity for expecting mothers and their babies. This study is especially important, as infants under 6 months old are at a higher risk of hospitalization during the Omicron variant surge.
Boosting Immunity for Pregnant Women and Babies:
Recent research published in Vaccine found that getting the COVID-19 booster shot along with the initial vaccine greatly increases the number of antibodies in both mothers and infants at the time of delivery. This is crucial for protecting infants who are unable to get vaccinated themselves.
Study Details:
The study involved 240 pregnant participants who received either the Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine during their pregnancy. Some participants also received a booster shot. Researchers collected blood samples before and after vaccination, as well as during delivery to compare the results.
Promising Results:
The study found that pregnant women who received the booster shot had significantly higher levels of antibodies compared to those who only received the initial vaccine. In fact, levels were more than 9 times higher for booster recipients compared to those who received the Pfizer vaccine and almost 5 times higher compared to those who received the Moderna vaccine.
Protection for Babies:
The booster shot also led to higher levels of antibodies in the cord blood of infants. Babies born to mothers who received the booster shot had significantly higher levels of antibodies compared to those born to mothers who only received the initial vaccine.
Conclusion:
This study provides strong evidence for the benefits of receiving the COVID-19 booster shot during pregnancy. Pregnant women who get the booster shot can pass on more antibodies to their babies, boosting their immunity and protecting them from severe illness. Future research is needed to further understand the impact of COVID-19 vaccines on maternal and infant health.
